Alex Garland Describes His A24 Movie ‘Men’ as a Folk Horror Film

We’re just one month away from the release of Alex Garland‘s (Ex Machina, Annihilation) brand new A24 movie I amrated “R” for “disturbing and violent content, and nudity.”

What can we expect from Garland’s latest? Well for starters, it’s not a science fiction movie at all, Garland tells Empire Online this week, but rather a folk horror movie.

“Yeah, it’s not sci-fi,” Garland tells the outlet. “If we’re gonna get into subgenres, the subgenre here is folk horror.”

Garland continues, “It’s the horror of rural England. It’s certain kinds of churches, certain kinds of forest – the shadows within dark green. That kind of thing. ”

I am will be released in theaters on May 20 and stars Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley. Rory Kinnear and Paapa Essiedu star alongside Buckley. Here’s the official plot synopsis…

“In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as a simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s shape-shifting new horror film. ”
