FARMINGDALE, NY – Irving’s Pastrami shop put together a courtyard for outdoor dining.
The renovations cost roughly $ 25,000 and include the courtyard, a repaved section of the parking lot, gravel, concrete, a fence to separate customers from vehicles, and more, said Andrew Fenton, the owner of Irving’s.
“It was a lot of work because it was really rundown,” Fenton told Patch. “The whole thought of that courtyard was so people have an outdoor place to eat. It’s beautiful in the summer. A lot of kids come here. A lot of families were asking ‘is there going to be a place to eat?’ We said, ‘You know what? Let’s make a nice beautiful courtyard, something where they’d feel safe there.’ “
Fenton plans to decorate the courtyard with palm trees, and the dumpster is set to be enclosed in a fence. Music will be playing, and Fenton said he is considering adding a putting green behind the shop. He may also add benches to the gravel to give people a place to sit while they wait for their pick-up orders.
Below is a tour of Irving’s kitchen and courtyard featuring Fenton.
Fenton said he wanted to bring an outdoor area to Irving’s, at 180 Merritts Road, as it would make the South Farmingdale eatery stand out.
“Maybe you might find something like that on Main Street, but there’s nothing like that [in South Farmingdale]”Fenton said.
Irving’s may add heaters to the courtyard if the popularity is there this spring, according to Fenton.
“I think it’s going to be really, really popular. We’ll do what we can to extend the season. At least extend it, if not do something where it could be year-round.”
Irving’s was founded on pastrami, but itssteak sandwiches, burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, knishes, milkshakes, ice cream sundaes and more.
When putting together the concept of Irving’s, which features outdoor seating, no indoor seating, and a takeout order window, Fenton said he was inspired by All American Hamburger Drive In in Massapequa.
“I love All American and their concept that they have there,” he said. “I think [Irving’s] is like a mini All American. “
