For the first time, three distances were on offer in the Wick Gala Week runs – a one-mile run/walk, a 5k race and a 10k race.

A heavy downpour just before the start had all the runners running for cover in the riverside boating shed. But the shower passed quickly and, by the start, running conditions were good, if a bit warm for the longer distances.

The one-mile run/walk had a mixture of old and young, runners and walkers. First home was seven-year-old Lexy Henderson, who ran the mile in a superb time of seven minutes and 32 seconds.

The 5k runners were led home by Connor Miller in 21 minutes and 52 seconds, followed by first junior boy Jamie Malcolm in 22.22.

Katie Shearer was first junior girl in 29 minutes and 10 seconds, followed closely by second junior Abby Swanson.

This was the first running of a 10k at Wick gala, with a course running through the town and out on the A99 to the Ackergill turn, down to Ackergill harbor and back.

The men’s race was won by Wick man Bryan Newlands in 40 minutes and 12 seconds, while the women’s winner was Chloe MacDonald – who grew up in Wick and has been running in Glasgow – in 43.18.
