WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – The NHL is coming to Wichita. Monday, G1 Sports and entertainment announced the “Frozen Face off” game between the Phoenix Coyotes and St Louis Blues at INTRUST Bank Arena on September 26th, 2022.
It will be the first time an NHL game will be played in the “Air Capitol.”
The news made its way to the skaters at the Wichita Ice Center quickly after the 11 am announcement. Travis Beye, a local hockey player, told KAKE News, “I’ve had four or five different friends asked me ‘so we’re buying tickets right? ”
Skaters at the Ice Center says that having the game here in town will be a lot of fun for local hockey fans, but also could be something that really helps grow the game.
Beye says “I think it’s pretty cool to just have a kid that’s never been go to a game. It’s really gonna make a lifelong fan, I guarantee it.”
“I think it helps raise awareness gets kids interested in so come down here playing and once you play this game, you enjoy it,” added Brian Huffman.
That’s an opportunity that Wichita Thunder General Manager Joel Lomurno also sees. “You’re probably going to have some people that, truth be told, have never been to a Thunder game and that are gonna come out to this game and maybe they get you know real excited and find out more about the Thunder on the flip page. “
