Taylor Gardner-Hickman branded ‘young kid’ after West Brom incident

Steve Bruce has branded West Brom ace Taylor Gardner-Hickman a “young kid” after his frustration overspilled as he kicked the ball into the stands.

The former Newcastle United manager insisted that the 20-year-old tried to kick the ball at the advertising board in frustration as the Baggies fell to a 4-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last night [April 18].

Gardner-Hickman “will apologize” if the ball hit a fan insisted Bruce who said there was no malice in the incident.

He told Birmingham Live: “He’s a young player, who’s as genuine and honest as they come, and he’s meant to kick the ball, I agree, in frustration against the advertising boards, and unfortunately, it’s gone over the top.

“And, if it’s hit somebody in the crowd, then we’ll apologize, and I’ll get Tayls to make sure whoever it was, if it did hit somebody, then we’ll get in touch to say that. I hope that’s okay.

“He wouldn’t do anything malicious. He’s a young kid caught up in the whole thing, and as I said, I think he’s tried to bash the ball against the advertising board and, unfortunately, missed it.

“So we apologize for those concerned. But he would never do anything like that and just try to damage anybody. ”

Learning curve.

It was clearly an accident by the midfielder. He had just put in an awful tackle on Philip Zinckernagel and got carried away with the emotions of the game in the aftermath.

It was a silly thing to do but very excusable considering his age and the nature of the game for West Brom.

Bruce and the players would have been fuming in the dressing room and he has carried that burden onto the pitch and allowed his immaturity to interfere with the game.

These are all things the youngster will learn from as he establishes himself as a first-team player at Albion.

Overall, it was a night to forget for the Baggies. a disgraceful decision from the referee in the first half completely ruined the game and it was a matter of damaged limitation ever since Darnell Furlong was controversially sent off.

A win last night could have put them within touching distance of the top six but there is still a lot of work to do.
