Wet weather forecast cancels Somerset town’s popular skate festival

Nailsea’s popular skate park festival has been canceled at the last minute – after an inclement weather forecast prompted health and safety concerns. The festival, now in its 20th year, was due to go ahead this Saturday (June 25) at the skate park at Millennium Park.

But after watching the weather forecast closely, which now forecasts rain, organizers have decided to postpone until next month. It is understood that concerns were raised about the concrete park becoming slippy when it is wet.

The 2022 event was the first one to be held in three years, after it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Festival director Phil Williams said: “After much discussion everybody agreed we want to celebrate in style and with the forecast being very mixed at best for Saturday afternoon, with some rain, brisk winds and chilly, we sadly have decided to postpone the event.

“A bit gutted we couldn’t do it first time round, but this is a cause for celebration and we didn’t want it to be a wet damp squib. Sadly for the past two years we have been unable to run the festival due to Covid restrictions and are really looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary by bringing it back to Millennium Park”.

The festival will now be held on Saturday, July 16 from noon-5pm. Plans for the new date include skateboarding, scooter and BMX competitions, with stalls and activities and food and drink outlets. The festival attracts entrants and spectators from across the area and is a highlight in the town’s annual calendar.

The original skatepark was opened in 2001 with the first skate festival held in 2002. Following a successful fundraising campaign led by the Nailsea Skatepark Project, a new park was built in 2016.

The organizing team is also looking for new members to join its ranks. Phil added: “If you have enjoyed the skate park while using it, or watching your children and teens, and would like to give something back through helping that would be fantastic”.

The group is also looking for sponsors for the event. For more information email [email protected]
