Wexford ice skating rink to open on the quay despite fears of cancellation over insurance costs

The Wexford on Ice skating rink is going ahead on the quay front this year, despite fears that the annual attraction would have to be canceled due to spiraling insurance costs and the unavailability of insurance cover.

at the Wexford Borough District Council meeting on Monday afternoon, Fine Gael councilor John Hegarty stated that the seasonal ice rink would not be opening this Christmas and the reason was down to insurance.

He bemoaned the loss of the amenity and said he would love to see it return to the town in the future.

But in a surprise announcement on Tuesday morning, the organizers Lantern revealed that the ice-skating rink will be opening on December 3.

Lantern marketing representative Louise Kinsella said there was a possibility that the attraction would have to be canceled due to the unavailability of insurance and the price of it.

“There was no insurer willing to take on ice rinks across Ireland. It affected all ice rinks but also other attractions such as activity and play centers. We just weren’t sure if it was going to run or not.”

She said the company managed to obtain insurance “at the final hour” but did not elaborate on the identity of the insurer or the cost of the policy.

“It was literally only confirmed this morning. It’s 100% going ahead. The dates are from December 3 to January 8,” she said, thanking Wexford County Council for making the quay front available once again.

“It’s great that it’s returning. We haven’t had one for three years. Wexford on Ice did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. It is going ahead. It is positive.”
